BCAPL 8-ball cheat sheet

8-ball

Abbreviated for fast reads. BCAPL (BCA Pool League) uses CSI (CueSports International) rules; this sheet is 8-ball only — when in doubt, open the official rulebook.

Call your shot Rail after contact 8-ball: called pocket only

01

Match format & rack

  • Race: first to X wins (league / event sets X).
  • Break: lag or coin flip decides who breaks first; BCAPL standard is alternating break — the winner of a rack does not break the next rack.
  • Triangle: 15 object balls in a triangle with the 1-ball on the foot spot at the apex; 8-ball in the center; one solid and one stripe in the two back corners; remaining balls placed randomly.

02

The break

  • Head string: cue ball may be placed anywhere behind the head string (in the “kitchen”).
  • Legal break: pocket a ball or drive at least four object balls to a rail (otherwise it is a foul).
  • 8 on the break: if the 8 is pocketed on a legal break with no foul, follow the BCAPL / CSI break chart in the rulebook (re-spot, opponent choice, or loss of game — edition-specific).
  • Scratch on break: cue ball in a pocket or off the table = foul — opponent gets ball in hand behind the head string.
  • Jumped object ball: any ball driven off the table on the break is a foul (opponent’s choice / ball in hand per rulebook).

03

Open table & groups

  • Open: immediately after the break the table is open — neither stripes nor solids has been assigned.
  • Establishing: the first legally pocketed called ball (after the break) determines whether you are stripes or solids.
  • While open: you may contact any ball first if your shot is legal under call-shot rules.

04

Call shot

  • Ball-and-pocket: BCAPL is call shot — you must designate ball and pocket for each shot (obvious straight-ins need not be shouted).
  • Banks / kicks / combos: call them when they are not obvious.
  • Extra balls: balls pocketed in addition to the called ball stay down; you keep shooting unless a foul occurred.

05

Standard fouls (ball in hand)

  • Cue ball scratch: cue ball pocketed or driven off the table — opponent gets ball in hand (anywhere on the table unless restricted by another rule, e.g. behind head string only on some fouls).
  • Wrong ball first: after groups are set, you must contact your own group first (8-ball last when it is your legal shot).
  • No rail after contact: after a legal hit, a ball must be pocketed or the cue ball or any object ball must contact a rail — otherwise foul.
  • Double hit / push: cue tip contacts the cue ball more than once on one stroke, or a miscue that is judged a push — foul.
  • Touching balls: touching any ball with hand, clothing, chalk, or anything other than the cue tip on a legal stroke — foul.
  • Shooting early: shoot only after all balls have stopped moving.

06

Loss of game (8-ball)

  • Early 8: pocket the 8 before you have legally cleared your group.
  • Wrong pocket: pocket the 8 in an uncalled / wrong pocket.
  • 8 off the table: jump the 8 off the playing surface on a stroke where loss of game applies.
  • 8 + scratch: pocket the 8 and scratch on the same stroke — loss of game.
  • Foul on legal 8 shot: any foul while pocketing the called 8 — loss of game.

07

Safeties & jump shots

  • Declared safety: you may play a legal safety — say “safe” (or clearly declare) before the shot so opponents know you are not attempting to pocket a ball.
  • Jump / masse: jump cues and masse are legal unless the venue or event forbids them; scoop shots or intentional miscues to jump are fouls.

08

Conduct & equipment

  • Cue: tip must be leather or other approved material; no non-standard attachments that aid aim.
  • Sportsmanship: no sharking, stalling, or intentional distraction.
  • No referee: players call their own fouls honestly and settle disputes per league procedure.
  • Concede / forfeit: you may concede a ball or game when it is clearly pocketable; repeated conceding can be unsportsmanlike — follow event rules.
  • Coaching: team events have strict coaching windows; singles / open play — follow the event sheet.
